Race Director Spotlight

When the JSTC feels like doing a sprint, DQ Events often has the perfect race to offer on most any radar screen.

Chuck Sellers and Bob Neeman have grown DQ Events from it's small South Jersey roots to now stretching from the Jersey Shore and the Skylands.

Their main focus for triathlons is the sprint
distance, 1/4 mile swim, 10 to 15 mile bike, and 5k run. They aim to accommodate the highly trained and competitive athlete,  competitive age groupers, as well the
average and novice competitors who just want to finish and stay healthy.   The DQ  motto is, "Compete, complete, eat, and still be home by 12 noon."

"I really love every DQ event I have competed in. They are well run and organized and the race directors are two of the best in the area. They are genuine nice guys and I cannot wait to race in their series this season! The post race spread isn't bad either."    JSTC's Maggie Freeman

Both Bob and Chuck have been competitive triathletes and runners for over 25 years.  They have done some great charity work, and their race series is often the number 1 topic of conversation on the JSTC member forum on any given Friday and Monday.

See DQ tonight at the race expo and check out their website here

***********************************************

The Jersey Shore Running Club has to be the busiest organization by a 5K here at The Jersey Shore.  If it's a big race, chances are Phil Hinck and wife Penny, Bob Both, Big Al and the rest of the loyal members are producing another great day for runners.

The JSTC member forum is alive nearly every week with members running JSRC events.  Our early season points toward the annual Jersey Shore Relay Marathon, where this year we will defend as Overall Men's Open and Club champions.

The JSRC Grand Prix Series is one of the finest race series in America, and the simple but competitive Thursday Night Summer Series in Wall is again a big hit with our triathletes.  Many bike 10-25 miles prior, and time it just right to change shoes and line up for a 3 mile super fast night cap with friends.

See the JSRC tonight, and visit their award winning website by clicking here

CGI Racing is is more like CGI Family around the JSTC.  The husband/wife team of Larry and Michele Redrow produce our designated club race and the grand-daddy in our area, The New Jersey State Triathlon at Mercer County Park.

Larry and Michele are more than triathlon race production.  They have been staging and overseeing projects for seventeen years including the opening of the Hawaii Convention Center, Atlantic City Convention center, Six Flags New Orleans, Donald Trumps 50th birthday party and many other events in 24 different states, 8 countries, and 3 continents.

Both love to compete- with more than 50 combined races including 10 half ironmans, 14 marathons, and a who's who of tri state road races and sprint/olympic events.

Michele, (pictured left), is known as our local club hardware supplier, for she has given out over 25 awards to JSTC members over the last three years.

CGI hosts the toughest 70.3 in our area- Black Bear at Jim Thorpe PA on May 31.  The June 21 Philly Women's Race is a urban classic.  There is always something big from CGI to choose from no matter what time of the racing year it is.

Click Here to visit CGI's website, and catch them Tuesday at the expo

Race XpoLooza 2009....More RD's on Monday.  This weekend, we cover local coaching making it's way to the 1st Annual JSTC Race XpoLooza

*************    Coaching Spotlight     ************

*************    Coaching Spotlight     ************

The list of elite triathletes from the Jersey Shore is long over the past 25 years.   If there were two generations, one would have to put Brian Shea of BPN at the top of that second wave of special athletes representing our area.

Now he coaches and educates not just the 3rd generation here at the shore, but a global melting pot of triathletes spanning all ages and levels.

Brian comes to the JSTC with a wealth of experience in endurance sports as an athlete, coach and consultant.  He President & Head Coach of www.PersonalBestNutrition.com & a certified triathlon & running coach.

He has formulated training and sports nutrition programs for athletes ranging from beginner to professional including 2x Ironman Hawaii Champion Chrissie Wellington, 5x World Champion & Ironman Lake Placid Course Record holder Simon Lessing, Olympic Marathon Bronze Medalist Deena Kastor and 5x Ironman Champion, Heather Gollnick

"Brian's vast knowledge of nutrition and its application to sport is unmatched. He has played an instrumental role in designing my own personal long-course nutritional strategy and I would recommend his services to anyone without question."    Heather Gollnick  5x Ironman Champion

As an athlete, Brian has been competing for over 20 years in all levels of endurance sports ranging from 5K to Ironman to Ultra-marathon. These events include (6) Ironman finishes including Ironman Hawaii with a 9:31 Personal Best (PB). Brian is also a 5x finisher of the NYC Marathon with a 2:49 PB, a time which he hopes to improve upon this Fall.

See Brian Tuesday, and click here to visit his website.

Bassman and the JSTC go together like wine and cheese!

An easy ride down the GSP, club members caravan to the pinelands each spring and fall to Bassman and hosts George and Alejandra Reagan's annual triathlon races.

CityTri is indeed a team effort.  USAT certified race director George Reagan's has over 10 years experience in putting on events.  Alejandra is cutting edge on technology and enhancing your racing experience.  Both continue to race and stage events around the metro area.

Piranha Sports

When you are a JSTC member and thinking affordable road trip for a good race, Piranha Sports instantly comes up on the radar screen.

Neil Semmel, (pictured left), is the founder of Piranha Sports, LLC- a full service multi-sport event management company.

Since it’s inception in 2001, Piranha Sports has produced more than 50 events for adult and youth athletes in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey.

Specializing in Triathlons, Duathlons, and unique Running events of varying distances and venues, the Piranha Sports staff is dedicated to providing quality, safe events which are highly organized and professionally orchestrated.

Last year, JSTC's Dave Slavinski won Piranha's New Jersey Devilman, which is often referred to as the area's season opener.   Who will come flying out of the blocks this year for the JSTC?   You  never know...But one thing is for sure.   There is always someone that is training hard and pointed toward Piranha Sports.

The Jersey Shore Triathlon Club's Dave Slavinski and Suzanne Huelster ran down the competition out in Tempe to claim top honors in team division at The Best Of The U.S. triathlon.

Dave ran a scorching 35:12 over the final 6.55 miles, and Sue went 40:42 as each ran the fastest split of the day to earn individual and team honors.

Sue, on the podium with Dave,  gives a shout out to the Jersey Shore Tri Club and all who helped her along the way to Tempe.  Dave and Sue are so gracious, it is sometimes easy to forget they are tenacious competitors.

Best of New Jersey Heads West

JSTC members Sue Huelster and Dave Slavinski are set to compete nationally for individual and team honors.

Sue has many friends in the club...Honest!            Dave sings Don Ho classics each Wed. at The Ark

This weekend in Tempe, Arizona, club members Dave Slavinski and Suzanne Huelster will represent the State of NJ at the Best Of The U.S. Triathlon.

Both will be competing for individual and team score honors.  The combined finish times from each state duo will determine the winner and be declared Best in the US!

Dave (37) and Sue (34) are relatively new to triathlon, though both have had standout careers in athletics.

Last year, Dave was riding a ten speed steel frame and swimming in a surf wetsuit.  Sue was taking swimming lessons in the summer of '07 while trying to make the transition from the elite level of duathlon into triathlon.

This past July 2008, Dave and Sue won overall honors at CGI Racing’s New Jersey State Triathlon in Mercer County Park to qualify and represent the Garden State at BOUS.

We'll feature many members in up close interviews this off season.  To get our new series started, we caught up with both our fellow club members at Brielle Cyclery as they were getting their bikes race ready for Tempe.

Home town celebration as Joe D. (L) and Dave Slavinski go wire to wire at The 2008 Treasure Island Sprint Triathlon in Point Pleasant

**********************************************

The familiar 3 pylons of River Road beach, where the Treasure Island Sprint takes place on The Manasquan River, greet many new faces at the JSTC each summer

The Treasure Island Sprint is a JSTC favorite because it's local, fun, and some of us have been racing here since the very beginning when RD Dave Johnson started it as just kayak-bike-run.

Early May swims signal the start each year of triathlon season

But the addition of swim has helped evolve this race into a celebration.   For, the JSTC has taught its' share of new members how to open water swim right here on the beach of River Road where the race begins.

The "River" is a place where things have unfolded for our membership....Terror, and eventual comfort often the case!  We enjoy long calm morning swims and quick late afternoon dips with thunderstorms closing fast from the west.

The Manasquan River's gravel shoreline is a welcome feeling on the feet at the Treasure Island Sprint

Clean and cold 58 degree water in May contrast July's murky water and River Road  beach closings. This annual event reflecting the strain our society places on the fragile eco-system, as earth's tidal cleansings can no longer keep up with dirty storm discharge and fertilized runoff.

September and Treasure Island bring the triathlon season to an end for most of us.  And it simply seems appropriate to end where it all began for so many JSTC members....The beautiful Manasquan River.

Kevin, Joe, Craig, Scott, Dan, Bill, CW, Dave, Bruce, Denise, Tim, Carrie, and Jon get ready to swim in the Manasquan River

Joanne is all smiles

Race organizers Regina and Dave make it better every year

Some of the best swimmers at The Jersey Shore volunteer their time, lead our membership at mid-week summer JSTC open water swims, then proudly wear blue and yellow on triathlon race day.  Very cool!

Bill, Scott and Craig celebrate their first year of triathlon where it began like so many other JSTC members- The Manasquan River

Team Kucowski- Ted, Brandon and Jen get ready for the start...

...Where dad learned to open water swim:  The Manasquan River!

Carissa came a long way in short time to complete her first triathlon!

Ken V's patriotic trunks are a familiar sight at tri and run events...so is JSTC yellow and blue!

Dan Simmons wrapped up his first year of tri with 3rd AG honors.

Club sponsor Dan Fishman of Tekmark, volunteered and got a first hand view of two dedicated athletes driven to be the best.  Dave Slavinski (r) and Joe D. came out of the swim 1-2 and never looked back.

Tim Horn took a personal challenge from CW, then crushed it to finish 4th.

Tina Duda rolls down River Avenue.  She had a great year in triathlon!

Mike (left) volunteered like many JSTC members over the weekend to help make for safe racing

Lance with the elbow edges Bruce at the finish

Anna loves the swim!

In 2008, Mike Washakowski emerged as a consistent podium AG'er.  Mike won 55-59 this year at Treasure Island.

Hard charging triathlete Denise Salvatore is one to watch in 2009

Master Sponsor Kathy Penna, of Brielle Cyclery, loves the Manasquan River and is the true foundation of The Jersey Shore Triathlon Club.

Above, she shares yet another laugh with Joe D's wife and support crew chief -Liz!  Kathy took all these photos except the above....Thanks Kathy!!!!

 September 14, 2008

The Lavallette Sprint Triathlon gave it a go for the second time in it's short history this past Sunday.

Race directors Gary and Bernie did a great job, and the buzz at the JSTC post race tailgate was this...The new kids on the block have one terrific race course for the entire Jersey Shore Tri community to embrace and look forward to. And it's right here in our backyard!

Kona bound Laura DeMeo (L) liked it too, as she captured 1st place in the women's division in 1:00:39.  Carrie Slavinski made her triathlon debut, and quickly added a 3rd place medal to the household trophy case!

More Lavallette

In the men's division, Robert Greaves (center) won the OA in 55:33.  JSTC's Joe Rooney (L) showed poise beyond his 22 years to finish 2nd in 56:17.  Joe edged out new JSTC member Ricky Miller (R) by just 8 seconds!

Jellyfish Suck

You heard about them at the NYC Tri.  If you have not been to the ocean of late, you would not believe the numbers of jellys washed up on the beach!

Each year, we are finding the jellyfish problem entering our waters earlier and more abundant.  The JSTC is committed to bringing awareness of this environmental complexity that lessens our ability to train and enjoy swimming in the ocean and NJ bays and rivers.

June Tuesday Bike/Run Bricks

Get stronger....get faster....learn to run off the bike!

Manasquan Reservoir, Howell is the place to be to ride your bike on a all right turn 6 mile 2 loop course, then run the 5 mile cinder trail around the lake.

This JSTC program is designed for beginner/intermediate club members looking to race sprint and olympic distance.  Learn to transition and teach your muscles to run off the bike.

Week 1 is more of a group ride for the beginners...a great way to learn proper cycling technique through a course that includes rolling hills, flats, and climb.  Then a easy pace run.  Intermediates will ride separate and faster if they want to.

Meet at 5:45pm here at the east end of main lot

Ride at 6pm course

SWIM CLINIC

The Jersey Shore Triathlon Club brings you Swim 101 on Saturday, April 26th from 3-5pm at The Monmouth County Boys Club, Asbury Park (close to Jimmy's)

The Club has reserved the 25 yard pool exclusively for our clinic.  Thanks to sponsor Brielle Cyclery, this is a "no charge" clinic for our membership.  This is a pool you probably never heard of, but it is perfect for our club and this event.  Very clean...Another diamond in the rough, as Asbury Park continues to rebound with the Jersey Shore Triathlon Club right there to be in on the ground floor.

Jersey Coast Swim Club coach Stephanie Croften Carey will lead the clinic and cover proper warm-up, swim drills, body position, breathing, open water spotting, and the benefits of interval training.

Stephanie has 20 years of competitive swim experience, 3 time IronMan, 8 time College All American, is an open water specialist, and currently coaches a children's swim team of 60 kids.

OPTIONAL VIDEO ANALYSIS

Sunday, April 27th from 3-5pm, Stephanie will spend some 1 on 1 by appointment to video record your swim stroke in the pool, go over the results, and send you home with a CD of swim to review and improve upon.

Cost of this optional program is $45

You may come early and swim prior to your appointment, and get additional help on your stroke from the swim staff there to help.

Contact info@jstriclub to reserve now.

Race Performance of the Year

Ted and Brandon Kucowski

Ted Kucowski has his hands full as Sheila and Sue bestow him and son Brandon with top honors at the JSTC "Season One" dinner.

The race was the New Jersey State Triathlon.  The date, July 22, 2007.  Our club was in it's infancy, as original members from the March meeting were still getting to know each other.  Our uniforms were fresh out of the box, and many members were doing their first race of the year.  We had no history, no race stories as a whole, and still were looking for an identity as a club.

With the swim waves close to starting, there was quite a buzz at the beach.  Lots of nervous energy and club members posing for pics and having fun.  Then Ted  entered the water with son Brandon in tow.  The crowd roared, and in an instant, there was an overwhelming sense of pride if you were wearing the yellow and blue colors of The Jersey Shore Triathlon Club among the on deck swimmers.  Ted, who had worked hard on his swimming with the club in the weeks leading up to the race, was picture perfect in his stroke as he began the race with everyone watching and cheering.  No pressure!

Ted and Brandon exited the water to another roar from the crowd.  Our club volunteers working hard out on the course at the water stops also shared the pride each time Ted and Brandon came by.  At the finish, it was an out pouring of emotion as Ted's wife Jen greeted her boys with a thousand people cheering them on.  The club soon joined in, and the party was on.  Ted and Brandon later collected the CGI Racing "Hero" award.  A special day in the Kucowski household indeed!

No single JSTC race performance in 2007 can match Ted and Brandon on that day.  It was gutty, it was inspirational, and it was a day that we will always remember.  A defining moment that impacted many...Not exactly what triathlon is about!  All the more reason to call their race on that day, The Performance of the Year.

Congratulations Ted and Brandon!
