3rd Annual D&R Canal Night Ride

25 degrees, 18 riders, 60 miles...1 swimmer*

*JSTC's Mickey Syrop (above), is down there somewhere after doing an End-"Oh" into the D&R Canal at mile 22.  Bike (right) faired better, and the ride  including Mickey continued into the cold night.

JSTC member and ride organizer Joe Patanella (right), of Green Brook Racing was fully prepared for the elements, and mercifully let us off the hook in the 2 am post ride push-up department!

JSTC's Syrop looked down to check the bike computer, and in an instant turned the night ride into a classic Mickey brick workout!  Change of clothes and the ride continued!

Mickey, minus snorkel but now with dry clothes, and JSTC President CW at the halfway house...Trenton's 7-11 at 11pm!   Meanwhile, JSTC's Andrew Brennan, (back left), fuels up for the 30 mile return ride home with the snack of champions- Red Bull Cola, sugar-cinnamon roll, and Fig Newton bar!

See You Next Year On The D&R Canal!

2009 Flashback- NJ State

Miller Emerges To Grill Stardom

Bob Miller rocked his fellow morning sprinters with tasty egg burritos, then easily handled the post olympic trio of burgers, chicken, and dogs when things got hectic.    A feat worthy of nomination for JSTC 2009 Performance of the Year.

Five Men Take On The World In Swim-Bike-Run

Special Series

World Championship 70.3

Coming This Saturday, Nov. 14

Starring JSTC's Alex Pape, Jeff Boehmer, Brian Norling, Joe Donahue and Dave Slavinski

Dave Slavinski

In recent memory, no one has electrified the local triathlon area fans, running stores and bike shops with more spectacular races than Dave Slavinski.  His 2008 season was one for the Jersey Shore ages- Devil Man, NJ State, Rhode Island, Best US, and Clearwater were a string of headlines that earned him "Super Dave" status.

In 2009, Dave has given much back to the club with clinics, coaching, training support and guidance on all levels.  Somewhere in between, he qualified for both Kona and Clearwater.  Many would say our best athlete in the club, is also our most unselfish athlete.  A combination that makes Dave Slavinski that special breed.

Trying to better his 4:03 from last year's perfect conditions will be tough enough.  Throw in Kona Ironman just 4 weeks ago, and you have quite a reason to cheer for Dave....And Joe....And Brian....And Jeff....And Alex!

Good Luck Men

Click here to see what Dave was thinking just before boarding his flight to Florida

Joe Donahue

Say "Joe D" and what comes to mind?   It's all good whatever it is.  One of the fastest swim bike run athletes around, he's been to Kona twice and has qualified for Clearwater each year since it's inception.

Glance through the archives, and you'll find he's Mr. Consistency.   Need a hand with a mechanical issue in the parking lot?  Unsure about your pre-race routine?  He makes it look easy the way solutions and answers roll off him.

But underneath, it's all earned.  The knowledge, the edge, the speed and endurance that make him a podium regular are there for Joe through hard work, endless training and smart lessons learned from racing.

Click here to see what Joe D. has to say

Brian Norling

If you make a short list of Jersey Shore athletes who had a breakout season in 2009, Brian has to be on it.  Many would say at the top of the list.

"Skeeter" stormed onto the podium early this year using sheer strength, but had matured by mid-summer into one of the smartest and most complete triathletes on the course.  With expectations high for his first endurance test at RI 70.3, Brian delivered the whole package in a cool and calm manner to qualify for Clearwater.

Residing with his wife Nancy and two children in the mecca of triathlon- Point Pleasant, Brian is a model for handling success when it comes fast, and it comes often.

Read what Brian jotted down by clicking here

Jeffrey Boehmer

Who's Jeff Boehmer?  For a couple of weeks in 2008, most of us only knew him as club member Margaret Hartman's visiting boyfriend.  Then he smoked Eagleman and qualified for Kona at age 22.  We called him Jeff after that!

The Bucknell graduate, now employed as an aeronautical engineer, knows a thing or two about wind resistance and hydro-efficiency.  An outstanding swimmer, he often sets the age group pace and stays there until the finish line.

This will be his first trip to the Clearwater World 70.3 Championship.  Jeff's parents are very supportive, and have woven themselves into the Jersey Shore Tri Club family.  The party's getting bigger at each race, and Jeffrey is only getting faster.  A trend we enjoy as a club, and have grown to appreciate knowing what it takes to get to the podium.

Read what Jeff is thinking about by clicking here

World 70.3 Championship Preview

Alex Pape

Nicknamed "G Man", when he's not traveling looking for a race and adventure, this 22 year old Georgetown graduate resides in the holy cycling grounds of Upper Freehold...Not a bad way to roll out of bed!

While still in college, Alex took advantage of the student exchange program to do IM Western Australia and has been tearing it up ever since.  A three time Eagleman top AG'er, Alex qualified this year for Clearwater at Calgary 70.3.

Special Series- JSTC Election 2010

President

Kathy Penna

You know that little copper wire you find in every household electric outlet?  It's called a ground.  Helps keep the network running smoothly, while at the same time preventing a catastrophic explosion.

Kathy Penna is our little copper wire.  The club is built around her and the well respected bike shop she owns.  Our home address is in fact 205 Union Avenue...Brielle Cyclery.

She is well respected both here in New Jersey and well beyond.  She has hung out in Slow Twitch's Dan Empfield's California mountain living room to shoot the breeze, and biked the Giro Italia with Cervelo founder's Gerald Vrooman and Phil White.

38 years and counting of selling and servicing bikes in Brielle, Kathy has earned the Top Woman Entrepreneur award from Trek Bike, led the local Brielle Chamber of Commerce as President, hosts the Tour de Cure Monmouth County start, sponsors two successful bike racing teams, and is always there to lend an ear and helping hand.

Click on Kathy and her crew for more inside info

Past President

Race over...Gear packed, the webmaster is ready to move on!

I am one of the original 3 who hung out late in the little red bike shop dreaming up a triathlon club in hope that it would do three things perhaps...

1. Preserve the rich history of triathlon here at the Jersey Shore for others to learn and respect.

2.  Offer beginners a platform to learn the sport properly and in organized fashion.

3. Harness the power of veterans to show how it's done and share the knowledge.

That pretty much sums it up.  I think we ended up doing a good job at it too!

My thanks to everyone, especially the other two- Kathy Penna for providing solid wisdom and a strong foundation, and Joe Donahue- who has led this club on and off the race course in too many ways to count.

Triathlon has evolved over the last 30 years, and now is exploding in warp drive.  The Jersey Shore Triathlon Club is very much a part of it.

We are here to stay, and with our new Board of Trustee's, great leadership and vision is secured.  I have already peaked at the committee work lined up for the November 3rd unveiling.  It has left no doubt that this new Board has provided an avenue for any JSTC club member who wants to lead, be a hard worker bee, or simply get involved and help out when they can will have that opportunity.

Special thanks to the original founding 50 members for helping us get off the ground, and thanks to those of you who joined since.  Past President is a Board seat for 1 year to assure smooth transition, so I'm happy to accept that and help in any way asked.

Thanks again for making me feel blessed.  CW

Dude on the far left has it right!

JSTC 2010 Executive Board Nominee's

Vice President #1

AJ Perna

"Heart of the Club" recipient in 2008, CGI Racing's NJ State "Hero Award" recipient in 2009, Ironman finisher 2009, and "Father of the Day" everyday in Island Heights, NJ.

AJ Perna has been inspiring his fellow club members since the day he walked in the door.

An accomplished triathlete and generous man, AJ also writes children's music, contributes, (and in 2010 will manage), the JSTC web matrix including this site and Facebook, and has been known to pick up his bass guitar from time to time and stun the audience with wicked solo adventure's.

Click on the Perna Family for more info on AJ

Vice President #2

Barbara Feinstein

Every club needs a battle tested PTA mom.  We got a good one in Barbara.

Excellent group management skills, outstanding business comprehension, creative, and driven.  Everything Barbara gets involved with is pedal to the metal and 5 star results.

2008 JSTC Triathlete Of The Year recipient, Barbara has the leadership skills both on the course, and in the board room, to help take our club to the next level.

Click on Barbara to read more about her

Vice President #3

Tim Horn, Esq.

Voted "Best Dressed" 3 years in a row, Tim's self confidence is obviously on solid foundation.

The helmet covering a brain that took him through law school and was smart enough to ask his bride Tracy for her hand in marriage.

With or without the styling shades, Tim's vision of where the club should go, and how we can get there without going to jail, is a tremendous asset.

The jersey...there is nothing good about the jersey!  But behind it, a true JSTC founding member heart.  Wearing it, a man that is committed to The Jersey Shore Triathlon Club by racing, actively engaging members on The Forum, and always there to set up and break down our club road trip adventures.

Tim will be our general counsel in 2010, and has already contributed to our club with construction of the bylaws and making sure New Jersey's largest non-profit triathlon club is in compliance with State and Federal law.

Click on Tim and his bride Tracy for more info

Treasurer

Kathleen Conway

Our nominee for Treasurer is Kathleen Conway.  Smart, low key and a proven strong elbow to help write checks with!  Kathleen's demeanor at our meetings is all professional, and then when it's time to have fun you want to be around her.  Did we mention she was smart?  Very smart.

Click on Kathleen's photo to read more about her

Secretary

Dawn Lenz

Our nominee for 2010 Secretary is Dawn Lenz.   Energetic, enthusiastic and organized, Dawn is simply a blast to be around.  Immortalized in JSTC history for her 2008 NJ State JSTC cake, Dawn has been helping us laugh and enjoy the club ever since.

Click on Dawn's cake for her background and thoughts on triathlon

Another JSTC Come Back

The old Augusta GA railroad draw bridge (left) provided the historical industrial backdrop for the swim start of this past weekend's inaugural hometown Ironman 70.3

The engineer and engine for the latest locomotive (right, Cervelo P4), to hit town was Christopher Cleary, a Jersey Shore Triathlon Club athlete who came on board early this year.

While iron and steel have provided many great stories in American know how, determination, dedication, and toughness....Triathlon's carbon and rubber is carving out a little slice of it's own epic tales for many in our community.

Our club seems blessed with more than it's fair share of inspiring people who somehow find us, and bring us into their lives in a very  personable and loving way.

Here is yet another.  Thank you Chris for wearing the JSTC colors and allowing us to come along for the ride.

Welcome to the Jersey Shore Triathlon Club

JSTC Announces Club Co-Op

Hoboken's Gold Coast- first to sign up

To better serve our membership when traveling to races, The JSTC has established a club co-op program.  Next year at NJ State, we will be adding more square footage to our camp and making the post race party bigger and better.

Visiting clubs will be allowed to store gear, have a little shade, and join us for a BBQ.  In return, when we travel to their neck of the woods, JSTC members will be welcome at that club's home base.

Look for future club alliance announcements, and races where JSTC road trippers can find a little oasis and make new friends in the triathlon community.

Interested clubs should contact us at info@jstriclub.org, subject: Club Co-Op

"Try a Tri" Rings In A New Era For Jersey Shore Triathlon

The sun rises over Barnegat Bay and greets the members of The Jersey Shore Tri community

Thanks for everyone's participation and patience today....Lots of fun and awesome efforts all around!

With a special shout out to Bernadette Taylor, Brielle Cyclery, Denise Salvatore, Rick Lill, Ricky Miller, Jon Feinstein, Brielle Performance Center, Dawn, Colleen, DA Smith, Greg Davis, Berkeley Township, Grace, Scott, Ted, Dan, and everyone else who helped get this party started.

Paddle board lifeguards Rick Lill and Ricky Miller lead the swim out for an in water start.  Denise Salvatore (r) keeps a watchful eye on the water!

L-R: Lee Helle, Dave Slavinski and Jon Feinstein enjoy a good morning triathlon buzz!

Above, overall winners Barbara Feinstein and Brian Norling, hold the prestigious (and quickly thought up) "Top Banana" award!

Fun and Fast....Very Fast!

Try a Tri had many newbies that did their very first triathlon.  Some veterans as well came out and gave us a glimpse of just how fast the Clam Man Sprint will be this October on the very same course.

(Above)- Ryan Clayton is looking good out of the swim, as head time keeper Greg Davis, (zebra), heads over to see how the splits are coming.

With our timing hardware somewhere on the high seas, Greg did a great job with stop watches and laptop capturing the race times.

Mark Catalano is 15 seconds from being launched at The 1st Annual Jersey Shore 30K Time Trial.

Long time Jersey Shore cyclist Rick Demerou was the man...holding each cyclist at the start for the entire race...And we mean holding on!

Dawn Lenz ready to rock!

Denise Salvatore even smiled after the turnaround...Into rain and 20 mph wind

There was some serious business going on!

Special thanks to our volunteers, who were the real stars of the day when 30mph gusts came through ahead of a severe cold front and rain system, that tested everyone involved.

(Above) Jon Feinstein worked the critical start.  Lee Helle and Patrick from Brielle worked the hot corner at 24th.  Steve Biroc handled the intersection out of IBSP, whose own patrol staff were magnificent.  Special thanks to Brielle Cyclery, Guardian Coaching, and the great Jersey Shore towns of Seaside Park and Berkeley.

Chris, Ryan, Scott and Dave christened JSTC's new home base for Manasquan River swimming late Thursday- Riverfront Park.  Good news to report on all fronts.

The water was full wetsuit tested and we are on for 30-40 minute river swims starting next week for intermediate and expert swimmers.  The water is still a little cold for beginners, so we ask you to be patient.  But, with a little cooperation from the sun, you should be good to go on the 25th for our traditional morning swim and help clinic on Memorial Day.

Riverfront Park is a great new addition for our club, as families can come down and utilize the playground and walking path while the other half is swimming.  Look for post-swim Monday night BBQ info starting after Memorial Day.

Schedule for May:  Monday evening 6:30pm and Friday morning 6:00am  We will add more swim in June.
